How to Get to Butterfly Valley by Boat: Times and 2026 Fees

How to Get to Butterfly Valley by Boat: Times and 2026 Fees

Butterfly Valley is Turkey's most famous natural wonder with no gateway other than the sea: a canyon with waterfalls and a beach, hidden between the 350-metre cliffs of Mount Baba. From land you can only look down from above; anyone who wants to step inside must arrive by sea. In this guide we cover the scheduled boat times, the 2026 entrance fee and the difference a private yacht makes.

Where Is Butterfly Valley?

The valley lies at the foot of the cliffs between Oludeniz and the village of Faralya, in the Fethiye district of Mugla. It is about 30 minutes by boat from Oludeniz, or a pleasant full-day route from Gocek by private yacht via Gemiler Island. It takes its name from the many butterfly species that live there, including the Tiger butterfly.

How to Get to Butterfly Valley (3 Ways)

MethodHowPros / Cons
Scheduled boat (Oludeniz)Out 11.00 / 14.00 / 18.00 - back 09.30 / 13.00 / 17.00 (~30 min)Economical / fixed times + crowds
Day-tour boatOne stop on mixed Oludeniz-Fethiye tours (~45-60 min stop)Easy / very little time in the valley
Private yachtFrom Gocek or Fethiye, at any hour, for as long as you likeFull flexibility, arrive before the crowds / higher budget

A note for those coming by land: the old path that descends from Faralya into the valley is not open to visitors for safety reasons; from land you can only look from the viewing terrace. The only way to see inside the valley is by sea.

2026 Entrance Fee and What's in the Valley

A per-person entrance fee is charged to step into the valley from the sea; in the 2026 season different sources quote figures updated in the 250-350 TL range, and the valley has been announced as closed to visitors on Mondays - we recommend confirming the current fee and opening days through the valley's official channels before you go. The viewpoint from above is free. The valley is not as deserted as people assume: within the protected area there is a restaurant, a bar, a small market, a diving school and a bungalow-and-tent style accommodation operation. (Last updated: June 2026.)

Captain's note: The valley beach fills with tour boats between 11.30 and 15.00. On a private yacht we take our guests either with the first entry at 09.30 or after 16.00 - the cliff shadows fall on the beach in the late afternoon and the photographs are far better at that hour. On choppy days, instead of mooring at the valley jetty we anchor offshore and go ashore by tender.

When Will You See the Butterflies?

More than 80 butterfly species have been recorded in the valley. Diversity peaks in late spring (mid-April to May); the Tiger butterfly that gives the valley its name is seen in the summer months, especially in the damp, shaded areas around the waterfall. Whichever month you go, look for butterflies in the quiet corners along the waterfall path - not where the beach crowds are.

Full-Day Route from Gocek by Private Yacht

We plan the route entirely around our guest's wishes; the flow below is the most popular full-day example departing from Gocek:

  • 09.00 - Early departure from Gocek Marina (to reach the valley before the crowds)
  • 10.30 - Gemiler Island: swim stop over the Byzantine church ruins
  • 11.30 - Butterfly Valley: beach, waterfall path and valley exploration (~2 hours)
  • 14.00 - Lunch on board, anchored in front of the cliffs
  • 15.00 - Swim stop at Cold Water Cove or Aquarium Bay (Fethiye)
  • 17.30 - Return to Gocek on a sunset cruise

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you reach Butterfly Valley by land?

No - there is no road into the valley. You can look down from the viewing terrace at Faralya; descending into the valley is only possible by sea.

How much is the Butterfly Valley entrance fee?

In the 2026 season a per-person entrance fee updated in the 250-350 TL range applies; there may be a different rate for children, and the valley may be closed on Mondays. A scheduled boat ticket (return) is paid separately; on a private yacht only the valley entrance fee applies. Confirm the current figure before you go.

What times do the boats depart?

Scheduled boats from Oludeniz leave at 11.00, 14.00 and 18.00; return from the valley is at 09.30, 13.00 and 17.00. On a private yacht there is no such restriction - we recommend a morning entry before the crowds.

Is there food and accommodation in the valley?

Yes - a restaurant, bar and small market operate in the valley; accommodation is also available as bungalows, canvas tents and a campsite. For day visitors, the most comfortable option is still to eat on board: lunch anchored in front of the cliffs is one of the finest moments of the day.

Is seeing the butterflies guaranteed?

Butterflies are wildlife, so it cannot be guaranteed; but in the damp shade along the waterfall path, early in the morning or in the late afternoon, your chances are very high. Look inside the valley, not on the beach.
