Aquarium Bay, Turkey: Gocek, Bodrum, Datca or Bozcaada? 2026 Guide

Aquarium Bay, Turkey: Gocek, Bodrum, Datca or Bozcaada? 2026 Guide

Turkey's coastline has water so clear that more than one cove has earned the same name: Aquarium Bay. There is one in Gocek, one in Bodrum, one in Datca, one on Bozcaada - even Kekova has its own. This guide compares them all: where each one is, how to reach it, whether there is an entrance fee (including the recent controversy) and why arriving by private yacht is a different experience altogether.

Where Are Turkey's Aquarium Bays? (Comparison Table)

Aquarium Bay, Gocek: The Clearest Stop on the 12 Islands Route

Gocek's Aquarium Bay earns its name completely: the water is so transparent that your yacht's shadow seems to float on the sand below. There is no road access - which is exactly why it never gets overcrowded. It sits around Tersane Island and Domuz Island on the classic 12 Islands day route and offers some of the best snorkeling in the gulf.

Captain's note: Day-tour boats concentrate at Gocek Aquarium around midday; we suggest our guests visit either first thing in the morning or after 16.00 - the light at those hours is also best for underwater visibility. The seabed is mostly sandy, so the anchor holds well.

Aquarium Bay, Bodrum: The Hidden Cove Between Bitez and Gumbet

Bodrum's Aquarium Bay (Adabogazi) lies 7-8 km from the town centre, tucked between Bitez and Gumbet. By car it takes 10-15 minutes, but the final stretch of road is narrow and parking fills up fast in season. Arriving by sea removes the hassle entirely - and lets you watch the famous fish shoals right under your swim platform. With Lalin and Foundation from our Bodrum fleet, Aquarium Bay is a favourite stop on daily routes.

Is There an Entrance Fee? (Current Situation)

Turkey's coastline is public, and none of the Aquarium Bays charge an official fee to enter the cove itself. The bay associated with the fee controversy is the one on Bozcaada: in summer 2023 a landowner started charging visitors 150 TL to reach the beach, causing a public backlash; the municipality shut down and sealed the unlicensed operation within days (similar attempts had been made in 2015 and 2018). The Bodrum and Gocek Aquarium Bays have no entrance fee; nearby businesses may charge for sunbeds and umbrellas. For those arriving by sea the rule is the same everywhere: anchoring in the bay is free. (Last updated: June 2026.)

The Datca and Bozcaada Aquarium Bays

Datca's Aquarium Bay is a favourite swim stop on the boat route from Datca towards Ince Burun; land access is difficult and it belongs to the blue-cruise classics. Bozcaada's Aquarium Bay, on the island's south coast, is reached by road and gets genuinely crowded in summer - it belongs to island-holiday culture rather than yachting. If what you are picturing is 'that crystal-clear cove you reach by boat', your route is Gocek or Datca.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Aquarium Bays are there in Turkey?

Several coves share the name: Gocek (12 Islands area), Bodrum (between Bitez and Gumbet), Datca (Ince Burun route), Bozcaada and Kekova. Which one is meant depends on context; on yacht routes the Gocek and Bodrum bays are referenced most.

Is there an entrance fee at Aquarium Bay?

Never for boats - anchoring is free at every Aquarium Bay. On land the coves are public as well; the 150 TL beach fee a landowner attempted at Bozcaada in 2023 was shut down by the municipality after a public backlash. Services such as sunbeds may still be charged.

Which Aquarium Bay is the most beautiful?

For water clarity and tranquillity, Gocek; for beach convenience and easy access, Bodrum. The Gocek bay has no road access at all, which keeps it pristine - that is the difference a private yacht makes.

Is Aquarium Bay good for snorkeling?

Yes - that is where the name comes from. Fish shoals and the life on the seabed are easy to watch in the clear water. Most of our yachts carry snorkeling gear as standard; visibility is best in the early morning and late afternoon.

Can you reach Gocek's Aquarium Bay by car?

No - there is no road. It is reached only by boat, roughly 40-60 minutes from Gocek Marina on a daily charter, with stops like the Yassica Islands and Tersane Island easily added to the route.
